Cost per slot-kilometre is the honest way to compare container ships. It folds bunkers, crew, maintenance, port dues and cargo handling into one figure, divided by the slots on offer. Lower is better. Each class is measured at a distance it would realistically sail, since comparing a coaster and a megamax over the same leg tells you nothing.

The figures assume a bunker price of $600 a tonne for VLSFO and quota at $72 a tonne of CO₂ — the units a bunker list actually quotes. Market prices move, but the ranking between ships does not.

Speed is in knots and draft in metres, as at sea. Inside the game the clock runs at twelve real hours to the game hour, so a voyage that takes a month in the world takes a couple of days on your schedule grid.

Bulk carriers and tankers

These carry no boxes at all — they carry tonnage, and the figure below is per tonne-kilometre. That is why the numbers look so much smaller: moving a tonne of iron ore is roughly a thousand times cheaper than moving a container, and it is why the two trades never compete for the same cargo.

Reading these tables

The biggest ships dominate the top. Spreading crew and hull costs over twenty thousand slots is simply more efficient than doing it over two thousand — provided you can fill them. A lane with 800 boxes a week will bankrupt a 24,000-slot ship no matter how good its slot cost looks here.

Feeders sit last, and that is not a mistake. Small ships win on voyage cost, not slot cost. On a thin 900 km lane, a cheap coaster that breaks even beats a giant sailing a tenth full. This table ranks efficiency at scale; it does not tell you which ship suits a thin market.

Speed costs more than you think. Bunker burn rises with the cube of speed, which is why the industry slow-steamed everything after 2009 and why the speeds here are the ones actually sailed rather than the ones on the builder's drawing. A 2008 panamax designed for 24.5 knots runs at 20 in this game, exactly as it does in the world.

Older classes are marked in the fleet list in-game. The gap between a 2002 panamax and a modern megamax is real: it comes from hull form, engine year and sailing speed, not from a penalty the game applies to make old ships unattractive.

The four checks before you buy

  1. Does it reach? Range must cover the sea route, which is not the great-circle distance.
  2. Can it berth? Draft must be met at both ends — the quay depth is a hard limit.
  3. Does the round trip fit the week? A slow ship on the longest lanes cannot get back.
  4. Can you fill it? Survey the lane first. Slots you do not sell still cost money.
